Tuncurry Mental Health Care Plans
Mental health care plans are a structured, evidence-based approach that enable eligible individuals to access psychological support through Medicare-subsidised services. At Tuncurry Medical Centre, we provide mental health care plans as part of a broader commitment to integrated care. Located in Tuncurry, the practice follows national clinical guidelines to support patients experiencing anxiety, depression, stress-related conditions, and other psychological challenges. These plans are developed collaboratively between patient and GP and may include referrals to qualified mental health professionals such as psychologists or social workers. Importantly, they endeavour to make sure treatment is documented, reviewed, and monitored over time, improving coordination and access to ongoing support.
Mental health care plans are a practical step toward managing symptoms and building resilience through early intervention. To discuss eligibility and book a consultation, call (02) 6554 5531.
What a Mental Health Care Plan Involves
A mental health care plan includes a comprehensive evaluation of the patient’s mental health status, current symptoms, relevant personal and family history, and any contributing factors. The GP will assess whether the individual is experiencing a diagnosable mental health condition, such as generalised anxiety disorder, major depressive disorder, or another condition recognised in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5). The plan outlines agreed treatment goals, recommended therapeutic interventions, and referrals to external mental health professionals where needed. Patients may be eligible for up to 10 subsidised sessions per calendar year with a registered psychologist, counsellor, or other allied provider under Medicare. Periodic reviews are scheduled to monitor progress and adjust treatment based on outcomes.
This process helps improve access to care, particularly for individuals who may be uncertain where to start. To find out more or request an appointment, phone (02) 6554 5531.
What is a mental health care plan in Australia?
A mental health care plan is a structured document created by a general practitioner for individuals experiencing a mental health condition. It outlines the patient’s treatment goals and includes a referral to mental health professionals such as psychologists or social workers. The plan allows eligible individuals to access up to 10 Medicare-subsidised therapy sessions per year. It’s intended to improve continuity of care and ensure that both GP and mental health professionals are working toward shared clinical goals.
Who is eligible for a mental health care plan?
Any Australian resident with a valid Medicare card who has been diagnosed with a recognised mental health condition may be eligible. This includes conditions such as anxiety disorders, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), eating disorders, and others listed in the DSM-5. The diagnosis must be made by a general practitioner, psychiatrist, or paediatrician. The GP will assess your symptoms, review your history, and determine whether a care plan is clinically appropriate.
How do I access Medicare rebates for psychology sessions?
To access Medicare rebates, you must first obtain a mental health care plan from your GP. After receiving the plan, your doctor will refer you to an appropriate mental health professional. Medicare currently allows rebates for up to 10 sessions per calendar year. The first six can be accessed after the initial referral, and the remaining four require a review with your GP to assess progress and determine the need for ongoing care.
